Meet the writer⁣

2 min read

Dear Reader,

If you’re new here, let me introduce myself. My name is João, I’m from Brazil, I was born in 1984, and I’m a writer. Sometimes I disguise myself as a full-time lawyer stuck in a tedious 9-to-5 job with a translation side hustle mildly affected by the world’s pandemic and my dedication to social media and other projects. But I do it all just to look normal, you know? Just to feel the hardships of being mortal.

I don’t know if you’re aware of that, but writers don’t die. Think about it. You talk to a lot of dead people when you read. You hear their voices. That’s kinda creepy, I know, but it’s true. That’s because we writers never die.

Say you’re reading that book about a guy who kills two ladies with an ax without getting caught, and now he’s struggling between crime and punishment. You’re reading the words of a man who died in 1881 (exactly 140 years ago). And yet, he’s not really dead, is he? He’s telling you the story, and he’s also telling it over and over to whomever opens that book. That’s what I want. I want to be the immortal man telling stories over and over when people open my books.

But I’m not entirely immortal yet. If that’s your question. I love the craft, and I put down words everywhere every day and some of them will never be deleted, but I still have to publish my novel to be satisfied.

I’m writing one right now, I’ll tell you later what it is about, but these words here are not about my novel, they’re about the bearded guy between these lines you’re reading and who you didn’t know yet.

I have a real beard. And, apart from writing, I love coffee, music, movies, and series. I’m a goddamn avid bookworm who loves literary fiction, books on writing, and classics. I also have a beautiful family, and I live in São Paulo, Brazil.

If you’re here, it means you like what I write and I’m thrilled that you do. I used to write more about books, but this week I’m changing it a bit to focus more on writing and inspire and share things about this crazy journey of this fantastic craft and maybe of becoming immortal.

■ Now, tell me: who are you, where are you from, and what do you do?
